(Begin Quote) Dr. Troutner was a real gem of a human being, someone who quietly exuded professionalism in everything she did. She never married as far as I know and lived with her sister in Charlotte in the house where she grew up. She was 81 years old when I last saw her and was in excellent health and very active. She was taking Hebrew at Michigan State University in East Lansing and had begun taking piano lessons. She told me it was her way of honoring her mother, who had always wanted her to play. She was an outstanding teacher and had a huge impact on my intellectual development.
You might also be interested in knowing about her somewhat fiery personality when she felt her students were being shortchanged in any way. Classical languages were phased out while I was at Olivet because they weren't profitable, according to the new college president at the time, Dr. Ray Loeschner.
I was informed in the fall of 1970 that the Greek class I had signed up for would not be offered. I heard a few days later from the secretary when I went to the office of the registrar to reschedule that Lela had been in the president's office all that morning upbraiding him at high volume about denying my educational opportunity (I was the only returning Greek student at the time on campus) and she also suggested that perhaps he wasn't suited for the task of educating young people. He ultimately struck a bargain with her. I was enrolled in second year Greek and she agreed to teach it for free in her office on her lunch break. I proceeded to enjoy the most intensive learning experience of my life. It is interesting as well as highly ironic that the College honored her by naming a building after her.
I'm sorry that I don't know more about Lela's personal life. I left Olivet for Michigan State after 1971. But I wanted you and your family members to know that although she had no children of her own, Lela Wilcox Troutner left a multitude of intellectual descendants scattered across the upper midwest. We all treasure her memory and benefit daily from her generosity of spirit. As she once explained to me, the word "enthusiasm" comes from the Greek words meaning "God within". She was the most enthusiastic teacher I have ever had. (End Quote)
2. After her death, a building at Olivet College in Olivet, Eaton County, Michigan was named for Lela. I learned of this through Kris Preacher who was trying to solve a riddle in which one of the clues contained Lela's name. Because our Web site was the only site he found with Lela's name, he contacted me. After learning that Lela had resided in the area of the college and was a teacher, he contacted the college, and was told of the building named in her honor.
